Frankenstein exhibition and play

The video for today explores the creation of the novel Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, which is back in the news thanks to a theatre play on show at the National Theatre.

Try to find the following information, and feel free to post your answers as a comment, including any evidence from the video. Something that you might want to be careful about is the name Shelley, which can refer both to the author of the novel (Mary) and to her husband, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Mind the context to know which of the two they're talking about at each point.

Enjoy!

  2. Right, as Cristina has answered all the questions, I'm just adding my comments:

In 3. I understand "heated off"

In 4: He talks about a huge volcanic explosion that covered the atmosphere on ash (the presenter adds "another ash cloud")

In 5: I think he talks about Lord Byron.

In 9: Her husband was helping her with grammar, he corrected a few words, factual changes??, as a gift.

In 10: Frankenstein and the creature (the figure in the text) saw eachother.

    That's all.

    I feel really tired.....awn!
    She you on saturday....

  6. So, answers to this video activity:

    1. Why is the presenter at the Bodleian Library in Oxford?
Because the play is predicated on the book, and not on any of the famous movies, and at the moment there is an exhibition about the novel at the Bodleian Library, where we can see even the original manuscript.

    2. Date of the Shelleys’ trip to Geneva: May 1816

    3. Expression to tell us that they are getting on well with their host: “they really hit it off” (informal)

    4. Why did they have to spend most of the time indoors?
Because there had been a huge volcanic explosion (mount Tambora, in Indonesia), which had covered the atmosphere in ash. It caused what was called the “Year Without Summer" (see http://www.yourdiscovery.com/earth/year_without_summer/index.shtml). So, an ash cloud like the one by our dear Eyjafjallajokull, only a lot more powerful.

    5. Who suggested that they all write a ghost story? Lord Byron (their host).

    6. Where did Mary get the idea for Frankenstein from? She said the idea had come to her in a dream.

    7. Number of novels she had written up to that moment: none.

    8. What’s happened to Mary Shelley’s notebook? It is not longer physically a notebook because the leaves were at some point detached, which means we now only have loose leaves (Sp. “hojas sueltas”). Do not confuse with the verb "to lose", by the way the past participle in that case would sound very different: it's lost leaves.

    9. Who wrote on the margins of the pages? Why?
Shelley (her husband, who was, as you will remember a poet). He helps with grammar, corrects a few words, makes some factual changes, and even adds whole passages

    10. What happens in the passage that they have in from of them?
It’s the moment in which Frankenstein is trying to find the creature, because it has murdered his younger brother, William. It’s a thunderstorm. If you listen to his reading, you will see that they actually see each other in that passage.

    11. Shelley tried to persuade her to _______live up______ to her great history inheritance.
live up to something: to do as well as or be as good as other people expect you to. Ex: He failed to live up to his parents' expectations.

    12. Mary Wollstonecraft (author of A Vindication of the Rights of Women) was her ___mother_______

    13. Full date of first publication: 1st January 1818

    14. Where did Walter Scott publish his guess that the novel might be by Shelley?
In his review of the novel.
