Conservation stories

Hello everyone,

Protecting biodiversity is the topic of this video we present today. To address some of the linguistic points that we have seen lately at different levels, I propose:

- Writing down all the adjective + noun collocations. Which of these adjectives have been formed with a prefix? Which of the nouns have been formed with a suffix?

- Writing down all the passive voice constructions.

What words or expressions from the video would you like to learn and use? Tell us in the comments!

The key, coming soon. Enjoy!

  1. Dear Beatriz and mates,

Let´s give it a try. Here it is what I´ve caught from the video:

    Adjective + noun
Irreversible pace, illegal hunters and poachers, irreplaceable biodiversity, international trade, illicit wildlife products
Threatened ecosystems, natural resources, protected areas, long term biodiversity conservation programs, floristic region, mountainous region, climate change
Global/Biodiversity hot spot, unique opportunity, pivotal role,
Social services, growing populations, local communities, private landowners, human life, human development, general/human wellbeing, current/future generations
Strong platform, costal management policy, well-trained gatekeepers

    Passive voice
In Madagascar 50 new species of lemur are being discovered in the last 20 years.
The island´s biodiversity is so rich that it´s often called the 8th continent. But globally, plants and animals are being lost at an irreversible pace.
Human development, given by rapidly growing populations, destroys and degrades habitats.
The World Bank and its partners are working to ensure Africa´s biodiversity is protected. With financing from an international carbon reduction program, the Bank is open to protect to nearly 400,000 hectares of Madagascar´s rain forest.
Along the coast of Namibia, uniquely adapted plans and animals are threatened by mining and human development.
In South Africa´s Cape Floristic Region, a global hot spot, the cape of biodiversity project is led to 58 new contracts with large private landowners who agree to protect threatened ecosystems.
Yet more needs to be done.

    Expressions
    Illegal poachers decimate many species

    Best,

    Irene

50 species of lemurs have been discovered.
It is often called the 8th continent.
But globally plants and animals are being lost at an irreversible pace.
Uniquely adapted plants and animals are threatened by...
Has led 58 new contracts of large landowners...
    Have played a ... role.
Has stablished a strong platform for governments.
There's more need to be done.

The expression I find useful to drill into my brain because by and large, it's related to global responsibility, is the following: 'There's more need to be done'.

Not too accurate I'm afraid... I'm specially curious to find out what the adjective that accompanies the noun 'role' is. Will anyone help me?

    Kind regards,

    Verónica
