Topic Video: Education

Hello everyone,

The video for today is on the topic of education.

I bring you one of my favourite TED talks: Ken Robinson speaks about education and creativity. For a more condensed, visual explanation, you have this animation video that I sent you once in the email video (I don't know if you'll remember of if you were in the list already).

The questions today require a bit of development, and quite a lot of attention. On the plus side, he's very entertaining. If you're having difficulties (British accent at tremendious speed sometimes... great), there are subtitles in English available.

1. He says we all have "a vested interest" in education - What does this common collocation mean, and why is it so?
2. What's his main point (as stated at the beginning)?
3. How is the education of children similar to running a company?
4. What's the universal hierarchy of subjects in education systems?
5. How would you rephrase the expression "to be predicated on the idea that..."?
6. What's the explanation of the "process of academic inflation"?
7. How does he compare the mind to the Earth in his "ecology" comparison?

Enjoy! Please leave a comment! Key coming soon!

  1. 1 A vested interest: A hidden or internal call for education.
2 The main point of the lecture is that in education creativiity is as important as literacy is.
3 If we stigmatize creativity on children, it will happen as a company when ideas are finished and it has to shut down. We should educate children to conserve the artist they have been born with.
4 In every educative system throught the world the system is similar, at the top of the educative syllabus are the subjects such as maths and languages whereas at the bottom ar the artistic ones. Why not it could be done the other way round and teachers would teach children how to dance everyday?
5 Was createdwith the aim of:
6 Every time you need more and more qualification in order to obtein a job and evry time is neccesary a higher level of studies to reach the previous "social and working" point.
7 We should take care of the Earth as well as of the children as both are supposed to remain alive in some years time, so as the future is unknown we should forestall them about what could come and prepare them to the possible future.

  2. A great answer, Abel! I could see that you didn't use the dictionary for the first definition, though. It's a very common expression and you should be able to find it easily.

The key is coming soon, though! Thank you for commenting!

    (excellent grammar by the way)
