A Bit of Fry and Laurie

A little video in which the meaning of the verb "to claim" is very clear. Let's remember what the dictionary says:

1 [transitive] to say that something is true although it has not been proved and other people may not believe it
claim (that)… He claims (that) he was not given a fair hearing.claim (somebody/something) to be/do something I don't claim to be an expert.claim something Scientists are claiming a major breakthrough in the fight against cancer.it is claimed that… It was claimed that some doctors were working 80 hours a week.

In this video,

1. What did the psychic claim?
2. What did he not claim?

So, I continue with my vindication of British humour. And a good opportunity to see Hugh Laurie outside his role of Dr.House (and a lot younger, too!)

Enjoy!

  1. Hi,
Really hilarious the video. I thought that it wasn't admitted to say "freak" to defined a "funny haha" person. I usually use geek!
Thanks for the video and nice weekend!
    Bests,
    Esther

  2. Hi Esther,

The word "geek" is more commonly used for computers freaks (also "nerd"). But yes, you could use the word "freak". As you know, very often it's just a matter of tact and of knowing the person in question (which we should bear in mind in every language...)
As you can see in the video, however, he does not seem very happy to be considered a freak!

Thank you for commmenting! Have a nice weekend too!

  3. Well, really funny, indeed.

    Now, as always, my questions:

    Min. 1:01--Would you care......?

    Min. 1:39--That much be clear......

    Min. 1:56--......if you bent..

    Min. 2:17 What people.....

    Min. 2:53 you know...

Min. 3:02 the begining is.....for you

The end is impossible to understand as well

  4. 1. What did the psychic claim? 0:07 To be able to bend spoons using psychic energy
    2. What did he not claim? 2:43 I´ve never claimed that my powers were unique.

    Hilarious!, Mr. House is "Unique".

    Thank you for the video.

  5. I completely agree with Eduardo in the answers.

Also I love when they say (something like...)
    Min. 0.27
    - Can you do other things with spoons apart from bend them?
    - I can do anything with a spoon
    - Really?
    - Yes. You give me a spoon and I´ll give you the whole world!
    - Well, that is an impressive claim certainly

    Min 2:31
    - What you said, did it bend by your hands
    - Yes, well, maybe the psychic energy does flow through my hands. Yes, but the effect is that the spoon is bent…

    Hilarious, thank-YOU for the video

  6. Hi!

    First of all, for Encarna:

1:01 - terribly fast, but I think he says "would you care have a go at them?"

1:39 - "Yes, that much is clear and beyond doubt"

1:56 - But from where I was sitting it did rather look like you bent the spoon with your own hands.

2:17 - Are you sure it isn't "fraud" that people shout at you in the street?

2:53 - You know, it just amazes me that I ever thought that you were sympathetic, you know.

3:02 - the beginnings of hatred for you.

    I hope that helps.

Eduardo's answers are right, but we can still find some more claims made in the video. Any others? Those who have not commented yet? Yes?

Thank you for contributing with your answers!
