Hi everyone!
Doing a bit of research for this topic I have found out that there are so many musicals worth watching! And so many we know of because they have been adapted for the silver screen, like Grease, Hair, Mamma Mia, The Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story,... Actually, with some of these I'm not even sure if it was the musical production or the film that came first. Any help?
This is a top ten list that, obviously, will not please everybody, particularly if you're a fan of more classical musicals. I, for one, find that there is one unforgivable absence!. But we have to take into account that the list aims at presenting some of the most successful or critically acclaimed productions. Or... this might one of those cases where a top ten just won't do. A top twenty, maybe?
What I propose is:
1. First, to take a look at compound adjectives with present participles. Remember that they are easy to interpret if you "read them" from right to left forming a relative clause:
e.g. a Tony Award-winning musical would then become a musical that has won a Tony Award... or several! Don't forget that the first part of this adjective is always singular, no matter what.
2. Then, to complete some gapped sentences.
3. To read the full transcript and annotate any interesting collocations (there are soooo many I couldn't make gaps for all of them!)
4. To comment!
So we start with the adjectives. Match the adjectives you're going to hear with the noun they refer to in the video. There may be more than one acceptable match. Then check while you're listening.
history-making characters
attention-grabbing numbers
(figures)
show-stopping dance
numbers
longest-running flick
(film)
Oscar-winning twelve
Tony Awards
award-winning production
record-breaking musical
And here are the gapped sentences:
1. Wicked

2. The

_______________________ of classic Broadway shows.
3. RENT is

4. Oklahoma ! is a

5. Oklahoma ! is thought to

7. Chicago follows two women

9. Even

narrator doesn’t hesitate to call “a musical and _______________________.”
12. The Phantom

All that is left for you to do now is to read the transcript and annotate your favourite vocabulary.
Oh, I almost forgot... And to comment! Do you agree with the list? Which is your favourite musical? You can also share the vocabulary you found interesting with us.
Enjoy!
Love the topic, there are so many great musicals! All the musicals you mentioned in the intro were first stage musicals and were adapted to film later; though now the trend is the opposite and successful movies are being adapted to stage.
ReplyDeleteI liked the list, most of the greatest musicals were there though there are some notable abstences: where is West Side Story???? Is definitely one of the most recognisable musicals out there. I also miss a Avenue Q which is an outrageously hilarious, absolutely irreverent musical that set the mould (I loved this collocation) for other politically incorrect musicals (The Book of Mormon for example). Anyway favourite musical kind of changes from time to time but right now is Into the Woods because it has the most amazingly witty lyrics i've heard in a long time, but it'll probably change next month. ;)
Anyway thanks for the video, it was great.
Thank you, Bea!
DeleteIs it me, or does it look like most successful musicals nowadays are adaptations from films? If that were the case, there must have been a change of trend at some point.
So your favourite in April was Into the Woods... Do you have a new favourite now in May? ;)
Hi guys!
ReplyDeleteWhat a rainy day!
Not the best weather for the half marathon in Madrid ….
….But I thought it was the perfect time to pay attention to this video full of vocabulary.
I would highlight some vocabulary I have learn (or at least I have written down in my notebook):
"Purrrfect" musical.
Purrfect (perfect): seeing flawlessness and purrfection in someone
Highest "grossing" production.
(grossing here is related to "gross": to earn a particular amount of money before tax is paid or costs are subtracted.)
E g: The film has grossed over $200 million this year.
Deftly (skillfuly) blend.
It also caught my attention the phrasal verb "rack up" in the sentence:
"there’s no question why the Tony award-winning production continues to rack up box office records worldwide."
Meaning accumulate.
Or the idiomatic expression, included in the 10 gap, "Little wonder", which means it's not really surprising.
I hope you have enjoyed the weekend.
All the best!
Encarna
Thank you so much, Encarna! You gave us the definitions and everything!
DeleteI would only add that "purrfect" is very appropriate here since we're speakiing of Cats, and purring is the delightful noise they make.
You have a great eye for interesting collocations! All those you mentioned caught my attention too. Thanks!
